Digital Workflow: From Paper to Vector Illustration
While every Plookiss character begins its life as a physical sketchbook drawing, bringing those designs onto art prints and wrapping paper requires a precise digital transition. Here is a look behind the scenes at how hand-drawn line studies become crisp, scalable vector artwork using Affinity.
Digitising the Physical Sketchbook
Once a sketchbook study is complete, the first step is capturing the artwork digitally. Using a high-resolution scan or clean overhead photograph, the physical page is brought straight into the computer.
Seeing the raw sketch on screen acts as the blueprint, preserving every organic curve, quirk, and character detail recorded during the original sketching session.
Vector Tracing in Affinity
With the reference image set on its own layer, the tracing process begins in Affinity Designer. Using precision digital tools, every line is carefully built over the original drawing.
Rather than relying on automatic tracing filters, manually plotting nodes and curves ensures that the hand-drawn essence and line weight of the original Micron pen work are preserved while transforming the design into clean mathematical vector paths.
Palette Building & Fine-Tuning Details
Once the vector outlines are complete, it is time to apply color and fine-tune the final layout. Working digitally allows for testing distinct palette variations—from warm desert tones to soft pastels—ensuring the colors complement each other perfectly across different products.
At this stage, digital layers are organised so individual character elements can be adapted seamlessly for standalone art prints or repeating pattern tiles for eco-friendly wrapping paper.
